In Kolkata, India – Misty, Cold and Smoggy yet Sunny

My first overseas trip in 2023. This is also my first trip to the cultural capital of India. Kolkata, known as Calcutta during the British colonial days has a rich history. The city has produced six Nobel prize winners besides legendary figures such as film maker Satyajit Ray, who was conferred an Honorary Award in 1992 for Lifetime Achievement.

Arriving at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport, Kolkata, it was a smooth and pleasant experience right from immigration, bag clearance and customs well past midnight. The day was one I enjoyed thoroughly. The city is indeed a beacon of intellectual strength and many important landmarks one has to visit.

The Indian Museum founded in 1814, the 1921 Victoria memorial representing the resplendent and majestic British architecture, the 1943 balanced cantilever Howrah bridge over the Hoogly river and the view of the Ganges are truly sights one cannot miss. The refurbished iconic Indian car Ambassador plying as taxis and the vibrant and bustling pedestrian walks reflect the busy nature of the city of 4.5 million people.
